Should you be taking a fiber supplement?

Should you be taking a fiber supplement?

When it helps (and when it doesn’t)

December 15, 2025 ~ by Marissa Beck, MS, RDN

Happy Monday, Reader,

I’m imagining you sitting there reading this right now and thinking, out of all the topics you could’ve shared during December with the holidays, the cookies, the craziness, you choose to talk about fiber, Marissa?

And I’d answer, well yes!! I think about fiber every day! Not in an obsessive way, but truly, I love talking about fiber and I love how it makes people feel when they eat more of it. (Not too much at once as that likely won’t make you feel too good 🤣)

The reason I wrote this blog is because one of the first questions I tend to get from clients when we aim to add more fiber is:

“Should I take a supplement?”

Usually this question comes from a genuine misunderstanding of what fiber is and how it works in the body. So I took some time to break it down in a way that’s clear, helpful, and (dare I say) enjoyable to read.

Fiber Supplements: Helpful or Hype?

You’ve been told to take a fiber supplement if you’re feeling “backed up.”

But is that actually your best move? (pun intended, ha!)

In the blog post you’ll learn:

  • What fiber actually does in your body
  • When a supplement might help, and when it won’t
  • How to get fiber from food first (because food > pills!)
  • Practical tips for adding fiber without discomfort

Plus, I added a FREE TOOLKIT to make adding fiber easier (and less mysterious) whether you’re starting from zero or just trying to bump your intake.

Download your Free Fiber Toolkit here:

What I love about fiber is how applicable it is for most of us, regardless of what you’re working on (i.e., digestion, energy, blood sugars, or overall health).

Thanks for being here, and for leaning into a topic that may not be the most festive one this season, but that truly matters all year long 😉

Have a great week ahead, Reader!

How I think about supplements and nutrients more broadly

I was recently quoted in Prevention sharing my non-diet perspective on skin health, specifically vitamin C vs. vitamin E. You can read it here if you’re curious:
